March 18

Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand. Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God.

– Romans 14:1-6

There are so many times in my professional and personal life, I run into people with different beliefs than my own. It may be medical, personal or political. I try very hard to approach these differences with a positive, non-judgmental attitude. This sometimes is very difficult, but I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be allowed to voice that opinion or belief without being bullied, embarrassed or ridiculed. I unfortunately observe so many times this is not how differences are handled. I believe if you haven’t walked in someone else’s shoes, it is very hard to pass judgment on their beliefs.

Attitudes are so important. Many of us, however, have never learned to have positive attitudes towards others who differ in our beliefs. God welcomes all, despite beliefs or actions. He will be there to pass judgment; it’s not our job to do that. We should not push people away, bully or criticize because of differences. God wants us to honor all in his name and give thanks. We need to treat all with grace and kindness.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, please give me the strength to open my mind to the differences of others. Help me to understand and accept these people for their beliefs and opinions. May I honor you by treating others with grace and kindness. Amen.
