March 17

Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

– Matthew 7:7-11

As a guide to pray, Jesus instructs us to ask, search, knock (the first letter of each word forming the word ASK). When troubles come our way, we often find ourselves in a waiting pattern, hoping for relief from our struggles. Through this verse, God gives us a promise and a path to follow in prayer.

Sometimes when we ask for guidance in prayer, God gives us a quick answer or revelation. Ask and it is given. However, when the answer doesn’t meet our expectations or timeframe, we may become frustrated and need to search for more. Searching our heart may find the answer that we seek. But what if the answer is unexpected or difficult? Finally, in some cases, we must knock. Why, God, are you not answering me in the way I expect? Why is this happening? Can you hear me God? I am knocking!

Jesus promises us that the door will always open and God will always answer. He will not leave you in your struggle. You can ask and receive his love; search and find his compassion and forgiveness; and knock to be welcomed into His grace.

God is waiting. He is there. Ask, search, knock.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, help me to know that you are there, that you wait in grace for me to approach you in prayer. Bestow upon me your will when I ask, guide me along the right path when I search for answers and embrace me in your loving arms when I finally arrive to knock on your door, giving me all good things. Thank you for your everlasting love. Amen.
