March 7

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

– Exodus 20:8-12

Reading this passage made me think about how hectic our lives are and how busy we get, pushing devotional or prayer time to the back burner, getting to it after everything else and if we have time. Sunday, especially, has lost the special feeling of it being God’s day and a time to “rest” and appreciate our blessings. We need to make time to realize that we are blessed and to thank God who has provided us with these blessings. I am thankful for my family, my children and grandchildren, and the blessing of getting another grandbaby. And I am blessed to have Westminster as such a big part of my life. It has provided joy, learning, comfort, and solace for many years.

During this Lenten season, it is good to think about our blessings and all that God has provided us with. It is good to take time from our super busy schedules to set aside quiet periods to remember the good things and how God has celebrated with us and the sad times when he has provided much needed comfort. God was also super busy for 6 days, creating all we have, and then rested on the seventh. Perhaps that is something we should think about, making that seventh day God’s day for us.

PRAYER:

Dear God, help me to never forget how blessed I am and how all that I have comes from you. Help me to put aside special time for thought and prayer, acknowledging blessings and giving thanks. In the blessed Savior’s name. Amen.
