March 10

I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

You heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to you.” If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

– John 14:25-31

“The Peace of Christ be with you.” This blessing is passed on from person to person in worship services in many churches. I never understood why this was part of the service until really paying attention to John 14.

After sharing the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus is preparing them, giving instructions on how to cope with the events to come. He knows the worry, anxiety, fear and anguish that will be experienced in the days to follow; arrest, trial, beatings, crucifixion, death and burial. Jesus is giving the gift of His Peace – the love of God, hope of redemption and resurrection.

It is also not a peace experienced in the world but an inner peace that may not be understood but is felt deeply when there is faith that God is near and will lever leave you alone. People may seek a sense of peace by avoiding the struggles, ignoring the anxiety or pain, denying the grief. Too often peace is sought through substance abuse, and addictive behaviors that temporarily give a sense of relief.

The peace Jesus gives is a gift of comfort, hope and assurance that we do not suffer alone. Whatever is happening in life, the Peace of Christ is given to you.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, thank you for the everlasting gift of Your Peace. When I face the difficult challenges in life and anxiety and fear begin to take hold, help me to accept your gift. May I always open my heart and mind to receive your Peace. Amen.
