“…a future and a hope.”

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. –Jeremiah 29:11

In response to the current resettling of refugees, the Outreach Team of Westminster is inviting you to explore an exciting new venture. How can Westminster assist a refugee family as they settle in the Pittsburgh area?

A core team of Westminster volunteers has been in dialogue with Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS) about sponsoring a refugee family for a year. It is now time to see if Westminster can build a large enough team to support such an important endeavor. Jewish Family and Community Services is a resettlement agency who works with refugees from all over the world and they are expecting a large influx of Afghan refugees in February. The families/individuals are interviewed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and only those who can prove they are escaping persecution are registered as refugees. Jewish Family and Community Services has years of experience resettling refugees and will partner with Westminster as a Sponsoring Organization. They recommend a team of around 30 volunteers. ALL MEMBERS OF WESTMINSTER are invited to consider becoming a part of this larger team.

Team tasks will include welcoming at the airport, supporting the family in transition to permanent housing, working on a finance committee to support the family, providing transportation to appointments, assistance in furnishing a home, providing meals, etc. All volunteers will need to get PA Child Abuse Clearance, a PA criminal background check, and an FBI background check. All team members will need to undergo training.

Many details surround this new and exciting endeavor we are considering. You are invited to attend one of the information sessions listed below to learn more about this new way for our faith community to reach out to those in need. These meetings will be on Zoom; link will be sent in registration confirmation email.
