Juggling Act

I will extol you, my God and King,
          and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you,
          and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
          his greatness is unsearchable.
Psalm 145:1-3

If you’re anything like me, there is a general sense of busyness in your day-to-day life. A feeling that if you stop moving, something will surely go undone. I suppose that juggling really is a good metaphor here – I can only hold so much in my hands at any given time, so in order to manage it all I have to keep the balls moving, keeping constant track of the next catch and the next toss…always moving. That’s what I think a lot of our days feel like.

When I read these few verses from Psalm 145 they sound familiar – there’s a lot of language like this throughout the Psalms. When I’m busy, and tired it’s easy for me to read verses like these and say, “But, why? Why do I praise? Why do I believe you’re great?” Honestly, I think these are good questions for each of us to answer. In 1 Peter 3 we read, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”

My hope is not in my ability to manage my juggling act. My hope is in the fact that my Lord and Savior can manage not only my juggling act, but also my failures – those times when all the balls hit the floor.

So if you’re busy, and tired, or tired of being busy – in what or in whom, do you place your hope? Is your hope that you’ll keep up the juggling act? Or do you rest your hope in the God who has held the balance and movement of the universe for all eternity?

Every day I will bless you, Lord, for you alone can hold my life with the same care that you hold the universe.
