Eye Witnesses to Glory

6 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved,[a] with whom I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-18 NRSV)

Wouldn’t you love to have been in Peter’s shoes? What would it be like to actually be an eyewitness to some of the incredible things that Jesus did during his earthly ministry? What would go through our heads as we watched him give sight to the blind? What would we be thinking when we watched 5,000 people eat from just a few loaves and fish? Would our mouths drop as we saw Lazarus in his grave clothes walking toward us at the Lord’s command? What would it have been like to sit around the fire with Jesus late at night? What would we talk about?

Yes, I am for sure envious of Peter and the rest of the disciples. But here’s the kicker, we worship a living and reigning Lord. Jesus is not limited to the 33 years he spent on this earth in the biblical witness, but is alive and active in our world today! He may not be as obvious to us, we might have to do a little bit of digging and carry a fair amount of awareness, but he is here and among us all the same.

Every year at Vacation Bible School, the kids lift up their “God Sightings.” This is where they look around their world to see if they can find any traces of God in their midst. Usually it’s things like “I got to go outside and play today” or “I really like my cat.” But all the same, if this is where these young guys and gals find God, all the better. The tradition carries over to our yearly mission trip (run by the same company as a matter of fact), where teenagers speak about all the places they have seen God. On mission trips, God tends to show up in the gratefulness of the people these students have served throughout the week. Or maybe he’s there in new relationships formed with friends from other parts of the country. But sure enough, by the end of the week there is no shortage of God sightings.

So I wonder if we could start logging some of our eyewitness moments. Perhaps keep a little notebook in your pocket for the next few days and just track where Jesus shows up in your life. These probably aren’t going to be movie moments, where the clouds part and the sun shines down and an orchestra plays softly in the background. More likely these are going to be subtle moments shared between friends, or otherwise insignificant moments of glory. I bet if we kept tract for a little while, we’d find an incredible pattern of God working in our lives each and every day.

I bet that you and I could be eyewitnesses to Glory.
