Betrayal

"But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table. For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!" Then they began to ask one another which one of them it could be who would do this. (Luke 22:21-23)

What do you think about when you think of Jesus? Is he a chummy kind of guy, someone that you would invite to a hockey game or a backyard barbecue? Is he an authoritative figure, someone who is to be obeyed at all costs, someone you definitely would not want to cross? Is he a larger than life figure? Kind of a mega celebrity that you can believe is standing before you? Maybe he's some sort of combination of all of the above?

I think we all too often focus on Jesus' divinity, which of course is important. Of course it is important that the God of the universe emptied himself out to become like us, to live among us, to take on flesh and blood and move into the neighborhood. Of course it is important to think about the incredible acts of power that Jesus accomplished among us. Of course of course, he is God. But he is also human, completely and totally, and this I believe is a piece of Jesus nature that far too often gets over looked.

Jesus knows what it is like to have a dysfunctional family (John 7:1-9). Jesus knows what it is like to be tired. Jesus knows what it is like to be hungry. Jesus knows what it is like to have a bad day. And, as we see here tonight, Jesus knows what it is like to be betrayed, by one of his best friends no less.

I think sometimes we don't want to bother Jesus with our problems. We don't want to bring something before him that he can't relate to. But the truth is that Jesus was 100% God, and 100% human, all at the same time. He knows our hurts. He knows our fears. And he cares deeply about both.

What is it that you hold back from Jesus? And what would it look like to bring it before him?
