Charge to the Couple
As God's own, clothe yourselves with compassion
kindness, and patience,
Forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you,
And crown all these things with love, which binds
everything together in perfect harmony
Adapted from Colossians 3:12
Marriage in the Presbyterian Church
Holy marriage is instituted by God, regulated by God's commandments, blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ, and intended to be held in honor among all people. Recognizing that God ordains marriage will help give you a clearer vision of what your wedding service should be.
As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), Westminster Presbyterian Church of Upper St. Clair, is governed by the Book of Order, which includes a “Directory of Worship.” The Directory says this about marriage: “Marriage” is a gift God has given to all human kind for the well being of the entire human family.
Marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man. For Christians, marriage is a covenant through which a woman and a man are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship. In a service of Christian marriage a lifelong commitment is made by a woman and a man to each other, publicly witnessed and by the community of faith.
The Art of Marriage
Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created. In the art of marriage the little things are the big things...
- It is never being too old to hold hands.
- It is remembering to say, I love you, at least once each day.
- It is never going to sleep angry.
- It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
- It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should't end with the honeymoon; it should continue through all the years.
- It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.
- It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
- It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have the wings of an angel. It is not looking for perfection in each other. It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
- It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
- It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
- It is finding room for the things of the spirit. It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
- It is not only marrying the right partner; it is being the right partner.
- It is discovering what marriage can be, at its best, as expressed in the words Mark Twain used in a tribute to his wife: “Whatever she was, there was Eden.” Wilferd Peterson, The Art of Living
