Westminster Gifting Tree
The Outreach Commission is excited to introduce the Westminster Gifting Tree. Westminster often gets requests from our mission agency partners to provide specific items to help the people they serve. IHN may need items for their families, Washington City Mission may need medical clinic supplies, SHIM may need a specific item for their food bank. The Deacons also occasionally identify emergency needs requested by families in distress (clothing, etc).
To help, the Outreach Commission has created a year-round Gifting Tree which will have gift tags on it detailing specific items requested from our mission partners – you can select any tag, shop for the item and return your gift right here to the church.
This is a great way for families to teach the gift of giving to their children as well as for anyone in our Westminster family to directly help others in need. New tags will be added weekly so check out our Gifting Tree (primarily located in the North Entry) and select a gift tag today!
BAIR FOUNDATION GIFT COLLECTION
Westminster is once again partnering with the Bair Foundation to help support local area foster children this holiday season. As we did last year, we will be collecting Christmas gifts for children in foster care who often come from circumstances dealing with poverty, abuse and neglect. We are the only church supporting this gift drive and there are over 200 children this year so any help is greatly appreciated. Here's how you can help:
Take a Tag!
Our Gifting Trees will be full of tags with gift ideas for the Bair foster children (some of whom will receive nothing without our help.) We have tags for babies through teens, so any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. You can find the tags located on the various Gifting Trees around the church. Please return gifts to the church by Monday, December 9.
Support our Bair Gift Collection Fund
We’ve started a fund this year to help with two scenarios. First, the tags left on our trees are usually the older child gift card requests. While a gift card may seem impersonal, it really is a much appreciated gift for a teenager who has nothing. There are also “last minute kids” who come into emergency foster care in late December and often don’t receive Christmas gifts due to the timing of their placement. Our fund will be used to purchase gifts and/or gift cards to care for the foster children in these two scenarios.
To contribute to our Bair Gift Collection Fund, put a donation into the collection plate on Sunday morning (marked as a Bair Gift donation) or drop off or mail checks to the church office. Checks should be made out to Westminster Church with “Bair Gift Fund” in the memo line. If you would rather donate gift cards directly, $25 increments work best for larger type of stores usually found along a bus or trolley line (Walmart, Target, etc).
Please direct questions about how to participate in the fund to Janet Hignett, who will organize this collection, at the church office (412-835-6630).
ELECTRONIC/VIDEO GAME SYSTEM DONATIONS
Do you have any used video game systems or IPods collecting dust at your house? We have some Bair Foundation foster kids who have a wish for these items and we would be glad to re-purpose them for you.
Specifically, we have a family of three boys in foster care who would love an Xbox or Playstation 3, two little boys who would love a Nintendo DS, and several tween girls who are wishing for an IPod.
If you can help with this request, please call Janet Hignett at the church office or email us.
