Deacons

"It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the Session."

– The Book of Church Order

Our Mission and Duty

With sympathy, as a witness for Jesus, and as a service, Deacons minister to the needy, sick, friendless, and those in distress; assume the duties delegated by Session.

TERM OF OFFICE
Three year term; 2 consecutive terms maximum

PRESIDING OFFICERS

  • The Board is organized as an executive team consisting of a Moderator, Vice Moderator, Secretary, and Treasurer. The day-to-day activities are handled through mission teams under the guidance of mission team leaders.

  • Deacon meetings are held the third Monday of each month, approximately nine times each year (Deacons usually do not meet in May, June, or December) at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are typically 2 - 3 hours in length. The meetings begin in Room 176 with mission team meetings, then the group joins with Session in Fellowship Hall at 7:30 p.m. and finishes by returning to Room 176 to complete the meeting. Dress is informal.

  • Parliamentary procedure is followed at all meetings. Minutes of the prior month's meeting and an agenda for the current meeting are placed in the Deacon's mail boxes one week prior to each meeting. Mail boxes are located on the wall just off the Gallery.

  • New Deacons are expected to attend an officer training program which is usually held in November. This training program is designed to acquaint new Deacons and elders with basic information about church history and doctrine, church government and policy, and the specifics of serving as an officer at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Mission Teams of Deacons

Most of the activities of the Board of Deacons are carried out through its mission team system. The teams may meet and plan their programs at times separate from the regular monthly meetings of the board. Deacons are placed on mission teams according to their interests and the organizational needs. Normally third-year deacons, who have previously served on a team, are selected by the moderator as team leaders. The teams are reorganized in January each year, at which time Deacons may change teams if so desired.

To learn more about the specific mission teams, visit Volunteer Ministry - Board of Deacons.
